Hard As Steel A Hard Ink/Raven Riders Crossover 1001 Dark Nights edition by Laura Kaye Romance eBooks

I was so excited when I heard that Jess and Ike were getting a book. Jessica is such a sweet and giving person. She has such a fun sense of humor and seemed to delight in getting under Ike's skin. Ike was a bit of a mystery, he was quiet and didn't let others in. I knew from the Hard Ink series that at some point what was going on would have to effect Jessica. Ike was already involved because of the Raven Raiders helping the Hard Ink guys. I was surprised yet again the lengths the bad guys would go to in order to get to them.
Jess calls Ike after her apartment has been ransacked and she over hears the guys in her apartment say they need her. Ike decides that he needs to get Jessica somewhere safe, which leads to him taking Jessica out of Baltimore.
I always knew that if Ike and Jess had to spend time together with no one else that they would have to deal with their feelings for one another. I was cheering for Ike to sort through how he felt about himself and see he was worthy of Jess. Jess knew she had feelings for Ike but he felt that friends only was the best route. I was cheering for them to be together from the first page.
My all time favorite quote from Ike is: "When we're together everything makes sense. And when we're not...it's like everything falls apart." Also when he says: "That's just it, I don't want to be friends anymore, Jess. I want to be everything to you." I am truly in love with these two as a couple. They are a perfect balance of each other and I was extremely happy to see them get together.

Hard As Steel A Hard Ink/Raven Riders Crossover 1001 Dark Nights edition by Laura Kaye Romance eBooks Reviews

Jessica and Ike are thrown together when he has to rescue her from some mercenaries that tried to kill her in her own home. Jessica and Ike have had feelings for each other for years but have not acted on them. Jessica thinks Ike doesn't feel anything more than friendship for her and Ike does nothing to deter that notion. Jessica is brass and definitely not shy while Ike is a biker and tattoo artist. Both of them bring out the best in the other, but Ike says and does things that hurt Jessica's feelings in this book. Jessica finally confesses her secret guilt over the death of her father so Ike does the same with his guilt over the death of his first love. When Jessica doesn't look at him with contempt, he purposely hurts her in order to save himself from feelings for her he doesn't wish to acknowledge. Jessica thinks she covers her feelings for Ike, but she doesn't and he knows exactly how she feels. It was nice to see both characters finally get out of their own way to get their happy. A good, quick read.
Having read the first two of Laura Kaye’s Blasphemy series and really enjoyed them, while I wait for the next one to come out at the end of the month, I thought I’d check out her Raven Riders Series. Hard As Steel is a 1001 Dark Nights crossover novella from Ms. Kayes Hard as Ink and the Raven Riders series so I thought I would start with it.

Now, I’m not much of a grass is always greener type girl but this book seemed to bring it out in me. Let me explain. I checked out a couple of reviews on this before snagging it because although it’s book 0.5 in the Raven Riders, it’s book 4.5 in the Hard As Ink series and I hate feeling like I’m missing out when I read a book out of order. The reviews I read said this would not be a problem so I dove right on in. What a huge mistake. Can this be read as a standalone? Yes. Should it be read as a standalone? Not for an action-oriented girl like me.

Hard as Steel is mainly a relationship driven little novella about Jess and Ike. Ike is a member of the Raven Riders, but he’s also a tattoo artist at Hard as Ink and is one of Jess’ co-workers. They both have the hots for each other but have never acted on their feelings for a variety of reasons.

Now they are thrown together because Jess can identify one of the bad guys with whatever is going down in the Hard as Ink series and they are after her. Ike scoops her up and takes her to his cabin near the Raven Riders compound so she can hide out and he can protect her while the Hard As Ink guys take care of business with the bad guys. Although we get little updates here and there about some serious things going down it all happens off the page elsewhere. This sucked completely. Every time an update would happen I’d get a little jealous that I wasn’t reading that other book. I mean shots were being fired, stakeouts were happening, undercover things were going on, it sounded all kinds of interesting and up my alley.

What was going on in this book was a whole lot of guilt tripping on Ike’s part about how not good enough he was for Jess. How even though he wanted to jump her bones in all kinds of fun sounding ways he just couldn’t go there even though he knew she wanted him something fierce. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

It was angsty, it was hot, but there was no action unless it was of the between the sheets variety. So yeah, I wanted to read the other book instead of this one. This wasn’t a bad book. Ike was all broken and damaged and Jess was all quirky and stuff, but I was getting glimpses of that greener grass and it pretty much tanked this book for me. Well, tanked is a rather strong word since it’s a decent book. Maybe it just made this one look like I was getting plain old vanilla ice cream when there was a mint chocolate chip brownie sundae to be had elsewhere.
