Author has a good knowledge of chinese culture background. Base on that, the independent observations and analyse of the society there is very valuable. The description of language usuage and new meanings is very helpful for understand morden China.
Succinct and current overview of not only societal attitudes in China towards the regime, but also indicators of future likely response China's government might have to societal protest of said gov't. Informative!
I downloaded this book promising to write a review for the author and totally forgot (sorry, man). It provided interesting enough reading material for my subway commutes (on the D train, which you'll understand as a little ironic if you ride the D and pass Grand street), but reads a lot like a college thesis. Maybe it was. It had quite a few typographical errors, and I found myself wanting to correct some of it with a red pen ... pretty heavy-handed use of cliche.
I learned a lot of interesting tidbits about China and Chinese culture from this book. I was reading this on a teeny-tiny Android tablet, and I couldn't see/read all the graphics, unfortunately.
The book describes the China not seen in sound bites. As such it aids in understanding China on the world stage.
This essay contains some interesting tidbits, such as information on cyber slang in mainland China. The writing is occasionally clumsy and reads like a blog post toward the end. I would recommend this to people who are already interested in China who wanted a quick and easy read.
Great, quick read about what the China watchers are talking about. If you want to get up to speed on China and have only an hour or so, this is your best choice.,
This book has an interesting cover for I simply cannot associate China with the cocktail glass shown. Yet I think.I understand roughly, the connotations of the added money and flag of China, also the communist symbols that embellish the glass.
It perfectly illustrates the contents discussed and the unstable mix or cocktail these seem to involve.
I have given 3 stars as it is is rather laboured for some while and involves explanations of Chinese characters and speech to show the subversion of language and the way this becomes a protest in modern China.
I then became fascinated at the way people protested and the intricacies of meaning in the Chinese individual consciousness and society at large. It just, in my simple way, reminded me of a pebble in a pond and the ripples outward so circles of this movement become larger until invisible to the whole.
For me, this described some of the ways if protest that are happening now and the way this knowledge is dissipated. I was imagining many throwing these pebbles and the ripples all interconnecting and the gentle disturbance and constant change to the body of water therefore having quite an effect.
This book.discussed some other ways that protest is carried out and the living conditions of both the rich and the poor in such stark contrast that this new way of complaint, a safer way against a constant fear of brutal reprisal is possible and is gaining momentum.
There was an interesting piece laying out the way the government responds by diverting the energy and anger and 're-unites' the people and also.changes the path this travels upon
I was thinking of something different when I got this book and was imagining a completely different scenario, some was mentioned within and it is to do with the way the western style of life is becoming global.
So, yes I would recommend this read. I nearly gave it up and then suddenly was immersed. There are some interesting ways of looking at things explained.
It is not long and I read it during a tray of tea drinking and 3 stars are for the largely useless information at the beginning as I cannot understand the writing and the slow and boring trial to get through. After that it did become stars all the way because it is interesting and I learnt much.
It is an essay of sorts....over modern-day China (2010 era to now). China is in a state of change.....which isn't readily noticed by US journalists. This book draws out a hundred simple stories to illustrate the change, and how the character of China is changing. Worth the read. Edited well, and reads easily. And yes, it is very entertaining.
