Black Widow Demon Demon Outlaws Paula Altenburg 9781622660452 Books Reviews

Raven is the spawn of a human (her mother) and a demon her mother slept with. We meet her as she sits in jail for stabbing her step father who has less than fatherly feelings for her. Her step father claims she tried to seduce him with her half demon powers of seduction and the only way to prove she's not a spawn (half demon) is by fire. If she burns, she's innocent-but dead so that really doesn't help her at all. Raven hopes someone in her town will speak up for her or come to her aid, but those hopes are dashed when she is walked outside to where she will be set on fire, and she realizes no one is going to help her, she's going to have to help herself.

Blade, a retired assassin is just passing through town on his way to the Godseeker mountains when he finds himself witness to a trial by fire, so to speak. The young woman he watches being led to what he fears will be her death pulls at his sense of morality and of right and wrong. While he doesn't want to get involved he also doesn't want to see the young woman suffer and plans to make sure her death is a quick one, that is until he watches her free herself and escape her fiery death. He's intrigued enough to follow her and that's where things get interesting.

In this book we find ourselves in a world where women are seen as possessions of men, demons have left their half-ling children scattered among us after being banished back to their own realm, and snake bites can cause horrific hallucinations. The author has created a vividly amazing world with characters that not only grab you and make you want to read more of their story, they make you feel as though you've been kidnapped, thrown in a dark corner of their world and are stuck there until they let you leave.

Even though I haven't read the first book in this series, I don't think that took anything away from this book. To say that I liked this book, would be an understatement. I loved it and will be reading the first book as well as any subsequent books that are in this series.

If you like assassins, magical amulets, demons and swoon worthy sex scenes, then you'll enjoy this book.

“None of us asked to be born. We should be given a chance to prove our value, not discarded as worthless.”–Raven

Given a second chance, Blade sets off, ready to find a new life for himself. Demons have been banished from the land, and mortals have a chance to start anew. Except now that the demons are gone, half-demons are discovering new abilities and can no longer hide from a world that they were born to but don’t belong in. As Blade encounters the half-demon Raven and she challenges his hatred against demons, he’ll discover that this now demon-free world is even more dangerous…

“Laws could no longer ignore the innocent. Not if they did not want the innocent to become the vengeful.”–Creed’s thoughts.

I loved the previous book, The Demon’s Daughter, and couldn’t wait to read this one, too! While there’s still the same great atmosphere that’s a mix of cowboy/western, fantasy, paranormal, and romance, it didn’t have the same spark as the first one. Set in another area—this time in the Godseeker’s lands—the only familiar character is Blade, who was so awesome in the first book. I kept hoping for cameos from other previous characters but no such luck.

Set six months after the events of the first book, Black Widow Demon seems more of a spinoff or a start of a series rather than a second book—as if The Demon’s Daughter was actually a prequel novel to this series. I say that because so many of the story rules seemed modified to fit this book, as if the first book was originally standalone and then the author decided to make a series from it. One of the biggest things I didn’t like was how it was a big deal that demons only had male spawn in the first book, but in the second book, there are many female half-demons, including our heroine. There’s also the fact that the horrific fate with spawn mothers seem to be forgotten as well as the negative connotation of the word spawn itself. While I like the newly established rules in this book since it’s a fantastic lead to the rest of the series, I hated that it broke continuity and what we knew from the first book.

That said, I still enjoyed the book and found it entertaining! The author’s mythology and world-building is still great, and I did like reading about the new half-demons and their abilities. They reminded me of X-men a bit with the factions (like Morlocks) and that some can hide what they are while others can’t. I also liked the fact that there still is no distinction between good and evil since all the ‘good’ guys also have baggage and you can see how that influenced our villain’s decisions. While I thought the main villain was a misogynistic jerk and great bad guy, I was shocked by another villain and am looking forward to reading more about that villain’s plan/role in the rest of the series! Both villains were fantastic and made the plot fast-paced and interesting as we wondered how our hero and heroine could escape their grasps!

I liked the leads, although not as much as the leads in the first book. Their relationship seemed kickstarted by lust, unlike the first book, so I didn’t find their emotional response at the start very convincing although I could see how they fell in love towards the end. For an assassin, Blade didn’t seem very good at the start since Raven ended up helping more (but then again, he’s a mortal fighting demons), but he did eventually redeem himself in the end (again, I’m probably biased because I loved how tough Hunter was in the first book). I did enjoy the secondary characters and even the minor ones.

Overall, I do recommend this book to paranormal romance fans who enjoy fantastic and creative world-building. Since this is in a separate area from the first book, you can enjoy this book out of order (although I highly recommend the first book). This is a 4 out of 5 for me!

Quick read with no real depth of characters. Just didn't grab me. The demon goddess dynamic is interesting & maybe something could be done, but just stock romance really with some fantasy thrown in.
