Something Secret This Way Comes Secret McQueen Book 1 eBook Sierra Dean

I finished this book in day, and despite the little cliffhanger I did not feel the need to purchase the next installment. The main character, Secret McQueen (yes...sounds a like a stripper name like Bambi or Honey), is a hollow remake of EVERY vampire bounty hunter you've already read -- think Cat from the Night Huntress or even Blade! And let's not add the fact ....SPOILER here for those who are still going to buy this book despite this review... she's a freaking princess! A wolf princess living in NY, and what's better is she didn't even know it! When I read this (along with the absurd love triangle), I almost stopped reading the book and deleted it from my Kindle. It just all seemed silly to me. Most readers of urban fantasy love a good romance (esp. love triangles), but the love triangle with Secret and two wolves just made me shake my head because we DON'T know anything about Secret and aren't vested in anything she does when she hooks up with two wolves!

At no point do we get to know who Secret is as a person ... or even the wolves that she is soul bonded to by the first 1/3 of the book. We go from one action scene ... to a sex scene... to an action scene...to a sex scene... and nothing of substance is written about any of the characters between these scenes nor are we overburdened with enough dialogue between the characters to give us an idea of what's in their heads. The author just did a poor job of giving us a chance to relate to our main protag before she started throwing eye candy at us. Perhaps Secret solidifies more in the next books, but because the author failed to make me like her character in this one I'm not inclined to buy the rest of the series. And to believe that Secret's genetic heritage is really a "secret" means that we have to believe that every vampire and werewolf is an idiot with nose congestion.

I must add that the writer is good, and I laughed out loud at least once ("You be healed b*itch!"). Unfortunately, this book was hollow as a pirate's peg leg.

Something Secret This Way Comes Secret McQueen Book 1 eBook Sierra Dean Reviews

I was extremely excited to read Something Secret This Way Comes after loving the prequel, The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters. I just love the main character, Secret. She is a kick-ass bounty hunter that works for the vampire council of New York City and she just happens to be half-vampire and half-werewolf.

Only a hand full of people know about Secret’s hybrid status; Keaty, her human mentor and partner, Holden, the sexy vamp that is assigned to be her liaison to the vampire council and her Grandmother that raised her after her mother abandoned her.

Secret keeps both of her inner “monsters” under control, she feeds from bagged blood instead of people and she doesn’t change into a wolf during a full moon. But she is finding that keeping her inner monsters in check is becoming harder and harder after she meets a group of werewolves while trying to hunt down her current assignment from the vampire council.

Speaking of Secret’s current assignment, she is taxed with the job of bring in a rogue vampire ALIVE to the council for questioning. The big problem is that this vampire is one of the first vampires that Secret tried to kill when she was sixteen and new to NYC. She barely made it out of their first meeting alive and now after six years the vamp is out to see her dead.

Dean does an excellent job of mixing humor, snarky dialogue, violence and just a touch of sexiness into her urban fantasy series. I loved this book some much that after I finished it and started the next book, Bloody Good Secret the moment I read the last word of Something Secret This Way Comes.

Fans of Riley Jenson series by Keri Arthur and Jaz Parks series by the late Jennifer Rardin will love Seirra Dean’s books.
So I recently decided to give Secret McQueen's world a spin. This fairly new series by author Sierra Dean focuses on Secret (yes, that's her real name), as she takes on the supernatural underworld. She herself is a vampire/werewolf hybrid bounty hunter, giving her the best of both worlds, though neither side realizes her other half. They just know she's a little different, and she'd like to keep it that way.

Everything is thrown upside down when a former vampire foe returns to exact revenge upon her and destroy the supernatural underworld's secret existence as we know it. To make matters even more complicated, she meets a potential werewolf suitor...or two and her knowledge of her werewolf heritage is awakened, among other things.

There's really not much else to it besides that if I'm being honest. The beginning started off really promising but it just didn't sustain for me. I thought it read like fan fiction a lot of the time and the writing was on an amateur level. With such a short page count I was expecting a story that shouldn't really drag, but I felt that it did. I can't really put my finger on it, but the lack of originality made it a little boring for me. I also had a big problem with how her heritage is supposedly a secret from the other half. Vampires have interacted with werewolves and vice versa, so how could they not suspect that she could be a hybrid? They should know better than to buy that her job as an assassin is the reason why she "smells of death." She takes showers and her enemies are alive when she kills them, so I just couldn't buy that reasoning.

The characters are all pretty cookie cutter. Nobody stands out as particularly interesting or eccentric. It doesn't help that we know right away that her love life is going to be complicated. A triangle is bad enough all its own, but there is an allusion to even more suitors being on the way and nothing turns me off more than that.

The book is a short read, but it took me quite a while to get through it. Maybe it's because I lost my kindle and have been reading on the tablet, which I really don't like because it makes nauseous (I read on a moving train), maybe it was my personal family issues that slowed down my motivation, maybe it just wasn't the right time to read this book, but all I can really say is that it just didn't do it for me.
